SENATE JUDICIARY CMTE: NO NEW SUPREME COURT JUSTICE UNTIL NEW PRESIDENT

Justin Gage | TyrantWatch

The Senate Judiciary Committee, which confirms court appointees nominated by the President, pledged Tuesday to not hold confirmation hearings on any Obama Supreme Court nominee. The Committee also stated they will not grant a face-to-face meeting with any Obama nominee, which is the most basic professional courtesy extended to potential appointees. After the death of Justice Antonin Scalia, the Supreme Court now has four conservative and four liberal justices. Therefore any Obama nominee, whom would definitely be “liberal”, would tip the scales in favor of the Democrats for the first time since 1969.

All 11 Republicans on the Senate Judicial Committee voted in sync, showing a solidarity that we weren’t certain to see just a few days ago. In a letter to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, the Judicial Committee stated their decision not to act was “based on constitutional principle and born of a necessity to protect the will of the American people.”  Current Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito weighed in on Tuesday as well, saying “There’s nothing in the Constitution that specifies the size of the Supreme Court. And it’s hard to believe that there were times in the history of the court when the court had an even number of justices.” The court “must have been more agreeable” then, he said.

After attending a meeting between Sen. McConnell and Judiciary Committee Republicans, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) stated that “We should let the next President pick the next Supreme Court justice” and added, “We like Joe Biden on this. He was right.” Vice President Joe Biden, Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) and others have come under scrutiny in recent days for their hypocrisy in criticizing the potential blockade by Senate Republicans. In 1992, while CHAIRMAN of the Senate Judiciary Committee, then-Sen. Biden suggested that the committee “seriously consider” not hold hearings on a nominee for an election-year vacancy.

Democrats, of course, continue to criticize the Republican position. Harry Reid (D-NV), Senate Minority Leader, accused the GOP of trying to “change the Senate” with its move to block any Obama nominee. President Obama has been personally phoning Senators over the issue lately, even reaching out to multiple Republicans in recent days.

This is an issue that touches on every right we are afforded. It has been discussed at length by us and others, and we have tried to encourage conservative Americans to reach out to their Senators and convey their “will.” We the People have achieved a small victory. At least there is consensus, for now, among our conservative leadership that we must take a stand for the values we hold dear. Please, continue to encourage our Republican Senators to stand firm on this vital issue. Our liberty depends on it.
